Description
Body perch-like; top of the head and preoperculum without scales; snout somewhat pointed, with the terminal, thick-lipped mouth slightly protractile; jaw teeth cardiform with 2-3 canines in front, conical or molar-like laterally; dorsal fin single, continuous, with 10 spines and 8-9 soft rays; pectoral fins long and pointed; caudal fin emarginate; scales ctenoid.

Distribution
Coastal marine fishes, dwelling on sandy bottoms to a depth of some 50 m. Carnivorous, feeding on crustaceans, worms, and small fishes. Forming schools when younger, the adults are solitary.
