Description
Typically with strong spines in the dorsal, anal, and/or pectoral fins; pelvic fins inserted posterior to the pectoral fins. Mouth not protractile, premaxilla and vomer usually toothed. Physostomous gas bladder reduced or otherwise specialized, connected to the inner ear through the Weberian ossicles. Pectoral girdle with three proximal radials.
Distribution
An order of mostly freshwater fish that is found on all continents, only a few families are marine.
