Description
Body elongate and cylindrical, covered with small, dense, ctenoid scales; the head flattened and usually with spines and ridges; the large mouth has a forward-projecting lower jaw. Anterior dorsal fin with 6-9 spines, posterior dorsal fin with 11-14 soft rays; anal fin with 11-14 soft rays. Swim bladder absent.
Distribution
Bottom-dwelling marine and brackishwater fishes, usually buried in the sand or mud.
