Description
Small- to medium-sized fishes with an oblong or elevated compressed body. Head naked with bony ridges on upper surface. Small, very protractile mouth with toothless palatines. Dorsal fin with 7-11 spines and 10-17 soft rays; anal fin long-based, with 3-5 spines and 8-14 soft rays. Scales small, cycloid. Lateral line complete or ending before or below end of dorsal fin.

Distribution
Small family of schooling fishes from Indo-Pacific coastal waters, also found in brackish and fresh water.
