Description
Body compressed, occasionally deep; inerorbital region and anterior profile of head concave; snout pointed; mouth very protrusible; jaws with small villiform teeth; dorsal fin long and single; dorsal and anal fins can be folded into scaly sheaths; pectoral fin long and pointed; caudal fin forked; scaly process over each pelvic fin.
Distribution
Some 40 species are to be found in warm coastal waters, especially sand- or mud-bottoms in mangrove areas, sometimes also in brackish and freshwater.
