Familia Chanidae

Description
Body terrate and compressed; mouth terminal, nonprotractile and toothless, barbels absent; dorsal fin is over the pelvic fins; pelvic fins situated near midbody, with 11-12 rays; pectoral and pelvic axillary processes present; there are 4 branchiostegal rays; scales are cycloid.

Distribution
This monotypic family has been reported from both sides of the Pacific, but Chanos chanos is most common in the Indo-West Pacific Region.
