Description
Body deep and strongly compressed; head and mouth are relatively small; dorsal fin long-based, single, with 5-8 graduated spines and covered with scales; anal fin also long-based and covered with scales; pelvic fins reduced or vestigial; scaled cycloid or ctenoid.

Distribution
Family contains 3 genera with 5 species from West Africa and the Indo-West Pacific. Usually found inshore and in brackish-water, often forming small schools in bays.
